THE SUN GLEAMED BRIGHTLY AGAINST the cool, blue water as we followed the winding road that ran parallel with the coastline. It was already warm out at eighty-five degrees and it was still early. There was no doubt that the temperature would continue to rise as the day wore on. I hoped that whatever our plans were, they involved something that would combat the heat.

I turned my attention away from the ocean, preferring to spend my time admiring the man sitting beside me instead. Dean looked cool and sexy in gray shorts paired with a black tank top and a white and gray striped button-up shirt which he’d casually left open. With his thick, jet-black hair, chiseled jawline, and a pair of Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses perched on his nose, he looked every bit the gorgeous movie star that he was.

I let out a dreamy sigh that would’ve been embarrassing had it not been drowned out by the sound of the wind rushing past us as we barreled down the road in Dean’s canary yellow Porsche 911. He’d refused to tell me where we were going, insisting that he wanted it to be a surprise. I’d pretended to pout about it, but in all honesty, I was secretly thrilled that he had taken so much time planning something special for the two of us.

I’d tossed and turned all night, worrying about whether I’d done the right thing by agreeing to go on a date with Dean. I’d refused to look too closely at my feelings for him, but I would have to be blind not to realize that whatever I was feeling for Dean was much different than what I’d felt for Akio. While I’d found my best friend attractive, he’d never made my heart feel like it was going to beat out of my chest every time I looked at him. I’d never been so aware of him that I knew when he’d entered a room without even looking, and when we were apart, I’d never felt the loss of him like a physical ache.

Those were all things I felt for Dean and that terrified me. I’d been hurt and disappointed when things hadn’t worked out the way I’d hoped with Akio and it had taken me months to get over it. Should I really be spending more time with a man I felt so strongly about, knowing that we had absolutely no chance of a future together? Probably not, but the thought of walking away from him now, of not spending every single second with him that I possibly could, made my throat feel scratchy and my eyes well up with tears.

By the time the first streaks of sunlight came peeking in the windows, I had made up my mind. Looking back over the last two weeks with Dean, I couldn’t imagine being on the island without him. I’d enjoyed every minute of my time with him and, even though it was going to hurt to say goodbye, I knew I would regret it if I walked away now.
